Continuing Professonal Development

CPD is the structured process of maintaining, enhancing, and expanding the knowledge, skills, and competencies required for professional engineering practice. It also fosters the personal attributes needed to excel in one’s career over a lifetime. Many professionals engage in CPD regularly, often without realizing it, through their daily work and learning experiences.

(A) Common CPD Activities

  • Formal training (in-house or external courses, workshops, certifications)

  • Work-based learning (projects, on-the-job training, technical mentoring)

  • Self-directed study (research, technical publications, online courses)

  • Knowledge sharing (presentations, lectures, refereed papers)

  • Industry engagement (conferences, seminars, technical exhibitions)

  • Leadership development (mentoring, supervising junior engineers)

  • Skill diversification (learning new software, tools, or emerging technologies)

  • Voluntary work (contributing to industry standards, professional bodies, or community projects)

CPD ensures engineers remain at the forefront of innovation, adhere to industry best practices, and meet the evolving demands of Hong Kong’s specialty engineering sectors.
